MY THOUGHTS
Period Repair Manual
This is a well written, all-round manual about the female cycle and all its many stages and changes throughout a woman’s life. It also explains what can go wrong (such as PCOS, endometriosis, insulin resistance, adrenal fatigue, PMS etc) and how you can remedy the imbalance naturally.
There is much to take away from this book as it is packed full of lifestyle and dietary advice (for instance giving up dairy, gluten, sugar, and alcohol has shown to improve migraines, PMS and symptoms occurring during perimenopause).
Briden offers a comprehensive overview with lots of helpful information on balancing your hormones naturally, treating period pain, inflammation and birth control, and on any aspects that contribute to women’s health in general. It also has information about how to talk to your doctor about any health issues, and which tests can be useful to discuss with a medical professional. Further, she adds a wide-ranging list of links for online resources (apps and websites) as well as a list of all the different supplements and their uses at the end of her book.
All in all it’s a good place to start reading about female health which can be helpful for all ages.
The Hormone Fix
I very much enjoyed reading this book as it is not only written with compassion and warmth but is brimming with fantastic recipes (I’ve already tried many of the vegan options), and ideas to improve well-being during the years leading up to and beyond menopause.
I especially enjoyed the part about eating a lot of vegetables, seeds and nuts while dropping the carbs to make sure your body is alkaline. I was fascinated about reading the research about the benefits of a keto diet and also intermittent fasting – which I’ve been doing since Michael Mosley’s documentary and books came out years ago – which Cabeca relates specifically to its advantages for premenopausal women. Added to the fasting, she makes a good case for adopting a low-carb diet which is not only easy to follow but I have found very enjoyable.
Overall, this book is all about feeling better and healthier and possibly even help prevent cancer and weight gain, a fantastic guide to keep by your side!
Perimenopause Power
In this book, the author goes through the different symptoms encountered during perimenopause, and offering insights into different ways of dealing with them – from food, to vitamins, exercise and the benefits of hormone therapy.
I appreciated the straightforwardness and hugely informative way of writing. It didn’t go over my head or was too technical. The author backs up her advice with diagrams and graphics and I applaud her attempt to stop the demonisation of hormone therapy.
The other strength of this book is that I felt heard and understood, that many of the symptoms the author describes are not only part of the process but that many treatments and approaches are available to successfully ease the journey. Most of all, she insists on the fact that much too often women are dismissed and misguided when seeking medical help and she empowers each of her readers to stop suffering in silence and seek help for the sake of a better quality of life.
